A clothing label about wanting into a building that won't have you, and the one that always did.
Chicago raised. Tennessee made.
The only church I ever went to was on a Sunday night. Smart Bar, Chicago, a party called QUEEN! We called it church because that's what it was — a room that let you in. Everybody on that floor had been let out of somewhere else first.
I live in East Tennessee now. There's a sanctuary on every corner and I love the way they look: the doves, the praying hands, the gold leaf, the hand-lettered sign out front with the week's verse. I'm just not invited inside.
Mourning Dove is the version I can make instead. Not a parody of the church and not a plea to be let in — a third building, with the same iconography and a different door policy.
Homegoing is what a funeral is called here. It's also what we called the last song of the night.
Home, death, family, place, memory.
